MasterClass: Yo-Yo Ma
Yo-Yo Ma is a world-renowned cellist. His MasterClass teaches how music expands culture and how musical performance creates connection. Navy, light blue, and warm yellow were the main colors of the set, and the overall tone of the class was elegant and soft. The Graphics package was inspired by the tone of the class and the set design to create a cohesive look and feel.
This concept plays with abstract shapes that explode and diminish in reaction to the music. A concert-hall-inspired palette reminds the viewer of the moment before a concert begins when the lights are low and the anticipation is high. Music is represented in the form of abstraction. Shapes grow, shrink, pop, oscillate, and travel throughout the frame, interacting with each other and responding to the score set for the title.
Concept 2 explores a lighter palette, with subtly-inked line work and prominent typography. Music is visualized in a linear manor, reflecting the world of sheet music, strings on a cello, and strings on a piano. Lines travel together and explore the frame in reaction to audio cues, before disappearing into an inky spread of the typographic treatment. The slight texture is used to fill the frame and make the whole experience more full and inviting.
Concept 3 is an abstract and close-up experience with some familiar textures and shapes. Inspired by the warm wood of a fresh-tuned violin, the curves of a cello, and the volumetric light on a stage; this direction is meant to invite, inspire, and engage. The viewer is wrapped in a world of delicately-shifting panels that morph with thoughtful elegance as warm light dances over the textured surfaces.
I expanded the entire graphic package around Concept 3, refining its visual elements to enhance the overall presentation. This involved building wooden graphic lines with varying speeds and angles, specifically for chapter and subchapter titles. Additionally, I created custom graphics that were carefully designed to amplify Yo-yo Ma's musical instructional messages, ensuring a cohesive and impactful visual narrative throughout the instructional content.
